This year, KAMMCO celebrates its thirty-fifth anniversary—a milestone allowing us to reflect on our history, the individuals who have shaped our journey, and the significant achievements we’ve made along the way. When KAMMCO began in 1989, we were a small up-start with just two million dollars of borrowed capital, two hundred committed physicians, and only two “bankers’ boxes” of underwriting files. From those modest beginnings, KAMMCO has grown into Kansas’ leading medical professional liability insurer, building a policyholder net worth of over $90 million and setting the standard of excellence in our field.
These achievements are not the product of luck but of the hard work and dedication of countless people who believed in KAMMCO’s mission. Our founder, Dr. Jimmie A. Gleason, took the reins during the late 1980s when medical professional liability insurance costs soared and became prohibitively high. He instilled the core value that still drives us today—always putting the interests of physicians and their patients first.
We also owe a debt of gratitude to influential leaders like Jerry Slaughter, who has dedicated over 50 years advocating for Kansas physicians. His tireless efforts to unite physicians under KAMMCO and push for legislative reforms, including caps on non-economic damages, were instrumental in establishing our strong foundation. Visionary physicians like George Farha, M.D. also played pivotal roles by not only contributing significant capital but also encouraging their colleagues to join our cause and become KAMMCO members. The list of contributors is long, but we stand on their shoulders, grateful for their foresight and commitment.
Throughout our 35 years, KAMMCO has learned many valuable lessons. Chief among them is the importance of knowing who we are as an organization and staying true to our values. Our promise to our members—advocating for a vibrant Kansas healthcare community, defending the practice of good medicine, providing financial stewardship, and working in service of Kansas healthcare providers and the patients they serve—has guided us through every challenge. For over thirty-five years, we’ve upheld these commitments, ensuring that we will always be here when you need us.
Thank you for your continued trust and support as we look forward to the next chapter in KAMMCO’s legacy.
